Killington is the first North American resort to open for 2015-16

It’s official—the 2015-2016 winter season is on, with Killington, Vermont opening its lifts today. Bragging rights for first tracks often go to Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin, which kicked off the past two North American seasons, but warmer than usual temperatures prevented A-Basin and other Colorado resorts from blowing snow so far this fall.

Out at Killington, riders strapped in to an eight- to 12-inch base this morning on the two trails that were ready to shred. Riders were also greeted by a few rails to warm up on, and Killington’s Mike Garceau says the park crew has already scheduled a rebuild on the features for tomorrow morning.

Killington plans to keep the snow guns firing as long as possible, but warmer temperatures are in the forecast for the Vermont region. Right now, the resort is slated to stay open through the week but Garceau says that if things get tight they’ll suspend operations until the weekend so that there’s still enough snow for the larger crowds.
